EmDash vs WordPress: what's the difference, and which should you choose?

Cover with the text “EmDash vs WordPress” in green and white on an indigo background, next to a table comparing technology, plugins, hosting and launch year.

Short answer: WordPress is the safe choice when you want a familiar system with thousands of ready-made themes and plugins, running on ordinary web hosting. EmDash is Cloudflare's new CMS, launched in April 2026 and built on Astro and TypeScript. It fits when you are building a new website with a developer and want safer plugins and modern hosting, but its ecosystem is still small.

What is EmDash?

EmDash is an open-source content management system (MIT licence) that Cloudflare launched on 1 April 2026. It describes itself as a “spiritual successor” to WordPress: the same idea of an admin panel and plugins, rebuilt from scratch with Astro and TypeScript. Version 1.4.0 was released on 29 October 2026, and the project on GitHub had 14,172 stars when we checked on 5 November.

EmDash runs on Cloudflare (Workers, D1 and R2) or on an ordinary Node.js server with SQLite or PostgreSQL. In other words, you are not locked into Cloudflare.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is the most widely used publishing system in the world. According to W3Techs it powers around four in ten websites, although its share has dipped slightly in 2026. It is written in PHP, uses a MySQL database and runs on almost any web host.

Security: plugins are the big difference

In WordPress, a plugin has access to the entire site: database, files and user data. A single vulnerable plugin can therefore expose everything. According to Patchstack, the vast majority of WordPress vulnerabilities come from plugins, not from WordPress itself.

In EmDash, every plugin runs in its own isolated sandbox and has to declare what it needs access to. A plugin that only needs to read content and send email can do exactly that. This reduces the risk, but it does not replace updates and good hosting.

Speed and SEO

A WordPress site can be fast, but it often needs caching and good hosting. EmDash is built on Astro, which sends little JavaScript to the browser, and that gives you a good starting point for fast loading.

Both have what you need for SEO: titles, descriptions, sitemaps and redirects. In WordPress you usually get this with a plugin such as Yoast; in EmDash it is built in. But neither WordPress nor EmDash will rank you on Google by itself. Good content and a well-built site do that.

What does it cost?

Both are free to use. The costs are in hosting, development and maintenance:

  • WordPress: cheap hosting and plenty of developers to choose from, but plugins and themes often cost money and need regular updates.
  • EmDash: small sites can run on Cloudflare's free tier, but you need a developer who knows Astro and TypeScript, and there are fewer of them.

Can you move from WordPress to EmDash?

The content, yes: EmDash can import posts, pages, images and categories from WordPress. Your theme and PHP plugins do not come along. They have to be rebuilt or replaced. Remember 301 redirects from the old addresses so you do not lose your Google rankings.

When should you choose which?

Choose WordPress if

  • you want a system many people know, and many can help you with
  • you need specialised plugins that do not exist elsewhere
  • you want to use ordinary web hosting

Choose EmDash if

  • you are building a new website and have (or hire) a developer
  • plugin security matters to you
  • you want a fast Astro site with an admin panel for your editors

What about Sanity?

Sanity is a third option: your content lives in a separate, hosted service and can be used on a website, an app and other channels at the same time. We compared EmDash and Sanity in a separate article. If you need help with Sanity, see our Sanity services.

Frequently asked questions

Is EmDash free?

Yes. EmDash is open source under the MIT licence. You pay for hosting and any development.

Is EmDash ready for production?

The maintainers describe the core as stable and ready for production. Official plugins are still on version 0.x and may change.

Can I use WordPress plugins in EmDash?

No. EmDash has its own plugin system. Content can be imported, but plugins have to be replaced.

Do I have to use Cloudflare?

No. EmDash works best on Cloudflare, but it can also run on an ordinary Node.js server.

Is EmDash better for SEO than WordPress?

Not automatically. Both have the SEO features you need. Speed and content matter more than which CMS you use.
